Lorna Simpson is a black woman photographer and she explores the way words and images function together with a focus on representation and stereotypes. She inserts the least amount of personal biography. Guarded Conditions was created in 1989; being 91x131 inches. The medium is a collage consisting of Polaroid print, Mixed media, 21 engraved plastic plaques, and plastic letters. Â
It's a series of three photographs of a woman in a simple Muslim dress in a relatively similar pose but there are three slight differences in each of these poses. This series is repeated over here for a total of six photographs. Even though it's very difficult to see, written are sex attacks and skin attacks. You can see how your brain is creating a narrative here and may be based on your prejudices and experiences. Her theme is the invisibility of black women in American culture and she does this in an amazingly subtle way that leaves a big impression
