Carmen Lomas Garza “Una Tarde”
A simple day in the life of a Chicano family in the 1960s. I hope you enjoyed this month’s look at mostly women artist. That’s my aim is to share more art from and by women that you know or don’t.
Carmen Lomas Garza, Una Tarde, was created in 1990 Alkyd on canvas and is 32“ x 24“. Carmen Lomas Garza was raised in Texas and many times discriminated against. She came from a working class rural family and was brought up in the 60s with the winds of resistance in mind. She decided to represent not the difficulty. She takes us on a tour of Chicano home sweet home. It is the cocoon everybody has their place on this lazy afternoon even the cat. We have a multi generational family: the little girl is bored playing with the fringes of her cover on her bed, the cat is feeding the young, Abuela is knitting. Mom just came back in from doing the roses. She and dad are flirting with each other through the window. We have a compulsory altar with the virgin and the portraits of the ancestors residing home. It is home sweet home. The style is naïve on purpose, simple, no hard edges, no pretension, just soft, and true.
